The way a vaper is exposed to the vapor with each inhalation, also known as vaping style, is often overlooked. Many people don’t pay much attention to it, but with a little research, you can improve your vaping experience. In this article, we’ll go into detail about each vaping style and choose the method that feels best for you.
There are two ways to inhale when vaping: MTL (Mouth To Lung) and DLI (Direct Lung Inhale). Each method will produce different results, with MTL creating a feeling closer to smoking a cigarette, while DLI can be compared to a puff from a shisha or marijuana joint.
There are many external factors that go into creating these two effects, such as resistance, battery, and airflow, but it also depends a lot on how the user interacts with their vape. Different methods give different results, from vaporization, continuous vaping, to flavoring.
Mouth To Lung (MTL)
Method – You inhale the vapor into your mouth before pushing it down into your lungs. It’s like sucking on a straw: You take a deep breath to fill your mouth with vapor, then inhale, drawing both the air and the vapor into your lungs. Smokers and ex-smokers will recognize this method as the same as they would normally smoke a cigarette. Long-time vapers will be familiar with this method.
Result - The sensation is weaker than DLI, but with the vapor remaining in the mouth for longer, the taste of the e-liquid is much more pronounced. Cigarettes and cigars are often smoked this way, so it is very effective for people trying to quit smoking.
Equipment needed – This method works best with tanks that use high resistance coils (1.2 ohms or higher) like the Kayfun and Mini Nautilus, low battery power (15W or less), and narrow drip tips. The e-liquids used with this method are usually PG-dominated, but you can still choose the right nicotine strength. You can still use MTL with sub-ohm kits, but your vape will be more susceptible to overheating.
Advantage:
- Use less essential oil: Essential oils are vaporized more slowly at the MTL, so your favorite bottle of essential oil can “survive” longer.
- Vape is less hot: Because it uses a fairly low battery capacity, it reduces the possibility of the vape overheating.
- Effective for quitting smoking – This method creates a feeling similar to smoking, very effective for people trying to quit smoking. Vape vapor is not as strong as DLI, suitable for new vapers.
- The essential oil flavor is better: Because the essential oil vapor stays in the mouth longer, along with the high PG ratio, it means you can feel the essential oil flavor more clearly with this method.
Disadvantages:
- Weaker than DLI
- Outdated technology. The current burner market is mainly for Sub ohm tanks.
Direct Lung Inhalation (DLI)
Method - Inhale directly into your lungs, as if you were taking a deep breath. This way, the thick vape vapor will quickly fill your lungs, creating the feeling of smoking a hookah pipe. This method is often used with sub ohm vaping.
Results - DLI has a stronger throat hit than MTL, which creates a more satisfying feeling. For best results, you need to heat the e-liquid to a high temperature and inhale quickly so that the vape does not overheat. However, because the hit is so strong, you will need to reduce the PG and nicotine levels. If you like to smoke, DLI is the key to creating huge clouds.
Equipment needed – To use DLI, you need to use an RDA or sub ohm tank. The e-liquid is high VG, with a nicotine level of 6 or less.
Advantage:
- More satisfying, a DLI puff feels much stronger than MTL.
- Creates a lot of smoke.
- Convenient for stealth vaping
Disadvantages:
- Not suitable for people new to vaping
- This method limits you to choosing PG and nicotine concentrations.
